Eating Disorder Recovery Coaching

I provide individualized one-on-one recovery coaching anywhere in the world via video for individuals 18 years or older who are struggling with eating disorders or disordered eating. I offer additional in-person services for my clients in Charleston, South Carolina.

We specialize in supporting individuals struggling with:

  • Chronic dieting or desire to lose weight
  • Poor body image
  • Anorexia nervosa
  • Bulimia nervosa
  • Binge-eating disorder
  • Compulsive Exercising
  • Orthorexia, or obsession with healthy eating

Whether you have a diagnosed eating disorder or simply feel stressed out by food, eating disorder recovery coaching can help get you to a place that feels good. Your recovery coach will ensure you feel seen, supported, and validated in your relationship with food. Your coach strives to support you in creating sustainable change in your relationship with food, body, and Self so you feel more aligned, fulfilled, and confident.

You and your coach will work together to uncover and transform the beliefs, habits, feelings, and relationships that are undermining your wellness, as well as bolster the things that you are already doing to experience joy and pleasure. Through eating disorder recovery coaching, you will learn how to release anxiety, guilt, and shame about what you eat and how you look and gain assurance in your ability to live a balanced, healthy life without relying on diets or food rules.

Online Sessions

Learn how to obtain a sense of power and control in ways that do not involve managing your food intake, weight, or appearance. Eating disorder coaching sessions will help you cultivate a more holistic view of Self to include important aspects of identity like one’s culture, character, values, spiritual beliefs, relationships, roles, aspirations, hobbies, and experiences, all of which tend to get pushed to the size when we are in the habit of defining ourselves by what we eat and how we look.

Your coach will be your biggest cheerleader. They will support in creating sustainable changes in your relationship with food, body, and Self so you feel more aligned, fulfilled, and confident.

In-Person Intensive

In-person eating disorder coaching sessions are designed to support individuals in early recovery who are currently working with a treatment team. We know that even with a team, recovery can feel vague and daunting. An eating disorder coach supports you in defining your recovery goals so you have a tangible image of wellness to work towards, as well as clear steps to help you get there. Unlike other professionals on your treatment team, a coach participates in your day-to-day life, enabling them to support you through activities like eating out at a restaurant or attending a fitness class. Your coach will support you in setting, achieving, and celebrating little recovery goals. It is through these small steps that you will create sustainable changes in your relationship with food, body, and self.

Embodiment Activities

Embodiment activities are activities that get you into your body and out of your head. Embodiment activities connect with your physical experience instead of your physical appearance and shift your thinking from “how does my body look?” to “how does my being feel?” The more often you can be present in your body the more you will live your life from a 1st person perspective (as opposed to a judgmental bystander). Releasing yourself from this judgmental bystander builds an appreciation of your body’s capabilities and opens the door to recognizing yourself as a whole person. When we show up as our whole, embodied selves, life becomes significantly more fun!

Activities like surfing and yoga are available in Charleston, South Carolina. Surf lessons and yoga sessons will help you access this embodied state, and are a fun way to connect with yourself and your coach.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between coaching, consulting, and counseling?

A consultant usually tells you what to do. A coach asks you questions to help you access your inner wisdom so you can decide what is best for you to do. A counselor/therapist is a licensed mental health professional who diagnoses and treats clinical disorders. Coaches are not required to have a coaching certification (Cosana coaches are professionally trained and certified) and do not diagnose or treat clinical disorders.Therapists are trained to help clients work on underlying issues and explore why the eating disorder might have developed. Coaches are trained to work on the “here and now” and assist the client in shifting their day-to-day beliefs and behaviors to be more aligned with their goals, needs, and values.

How can a coach help me create change in my relationship with food, body, and Self?

Healing is a very personal, emotional, and often terrifying endeavor. It is your coach’s job to support you through the fear that comes with healing and encourage you to challenge yourself in ways that enable you to keep moving forward. In working with a coach, you will come to understand the beliefs, behaviors, and relationships that are holding you back from wellness and learn to reframe these things to better serve your needs, values, and goals. In each session, you and your coach will determine the actionable steps for you to take that will assist you in creating a more aligned and fulfilling relationship with food, body, and Self.

What can I expect from my first session?
  • Get to know each other
  • Brief health and treatment history
  • Discuss current blocks to wellness and goals for healing
  • Understand the difference between coaching, consulting, and counseling
I don’t have an eating disorder, can you still help me?

Absolutely. You do not have to have a clinical disorder to desire changing your relationship with food. If you are someone who frequently feels the need to eat healthier, lose weight, or be “more disciplined,” coaching will help you identify and overcome the things that are driving you to try to control your food and weight in the first place.

Coaching sessions will help you release food and body related anxiety, build healthier attitudes towards food, and cultivate a more holistic view of self.

What if I want help, but I am not ready to change?

Ultimately, how, when, and if you heal is entirely up to you. You get to determine which things about your relationship with food, body, and Self you are ready to change, and which things you are not quite ready to let go of. Simply being honest about where you are at is the most important thing of all. Your coach will always honor your autonomy and meet you where you are at.

If I already have a therapist, can I benefit from working with a coach as well?

Absolutely. My basis for understanding eating disorders and eating disorder recovery is not theoretical, but personal. As a recovered coach, I provide a level of understanding and optimism that other professionals cannot. I am trained to use my personal experience to support you in building the skills to cope with and eventually transform your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to support a more healthy and fulfilling relationship with food, body, and Self. In a coaching relationship, I serve as a tangible role model for this healthy relationship and offer clients hope that full recovery is possible.

What are your fees?

Please contact me to discuss fees. For the quickest response, text (843)849-4060.

Do you offer a student rate for your services?

Yes! I believe access to mental health care is critical in preventing the development of disordered eating, depression, and anxiety. I also understand that students are may not be in a position to pay for mental health services. That is why I offer online sessions at a 30% discounted rate to students. Please contact me to learn more.

Do you offer a sliding scale for your services?

Yes! I offer a 30% discount to individuals who qualify as low income, work in healthcare (i.e. nurse), and students. If you graduated from an educational institution in the year 2020, you may also qualify for a discounted rate. You are welcome to contact us to learn more.

Do you have any requirements for working together?

You must be 18 years or older to schedule your own appointments. For clients 17 or younger, I require a  “Sponsor” or legal guardian to co-sign the coaching agreement and participate in scheduling appointments, assessing current needs, and determining recovery goals.

If you are actively struggling with an eating disorder or significant mental health concerns, I require that you meet with a therapist and/or dietician to ensure you are following recommended medical treatment. If you are not, we can discuss this in our initial session and I will happily make referrals to the appropriate medical/mental health professional and help you coordinate this.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations & Rescheduling

  • Cancelling 24-48 hours prior to your appointment will not result in penalties or fees. We are happy to be flexible, so long is our understanding is respected and not abused.

  • Last-minute cancellations are cancellations that occur within 24 hours of the scheduled appointment. They also result in a last-minute cancellation fee, which is the cost of the session. This policy also applies to rescheduling.
