Embodiment Activities

Embodiment activities are activities that get you into your body and out of your head. Embodiment activities connect with your physical experience instead of your physical appearance and shift your thinking from “how does my body look?” to “how does my being feel?” Activities like surfing and yoga help you access this state. In psychology, this is often referred to as "flow" (Csikszentmihalyi, 1975), a state in which you lose track of time and are immersed in a sense of enjoyment, alignment, and focus. It is also sometimes referred to as "adult play."

The more often you can be present in your body the more you will live your life from a 1st person perspective (as opposed to a judgmental bystander). Releasing yourself from this judgmental bystander builds an appreciation of your body’s capabilities and opens the door to recognizing yourself as a whole person. When we show up as our whole, embodied selves, life becomes significantly more fun!

Optimal experience, or flow, within positive psychology, has received worldwide attention since its birth: it depicts the psychological mental state of a person who is immersed in an activity with energized concentration, optimal enjoyment, full involvement, and intrinsic interests, and who is usually focused, motivated, positive, energized, and aligned with the task at hand.
